Dave Kim the Potter
This performance art showcases racial stereotypes through my alter ego, 'Dave Kim the Potter". It delivers a social experiments on false consensus bias, particularly in the American ceramics community via a social media platform, "Instagram".
The fictional character, "Dave Kim the Potter" satisfies the racial stereotypes of a Korean American potter; he creates large moon jars(iconic traditional Korean vessels) and uses the Korean language.
There are obvious hierarchical and exclusionary perceptions in the ceramics communities. The western society has always revered Asian pottery but have devalued African ceramics and ceramics made by African descent. Dave Kim the Potter uses this same perception to work against it; fighting stereotypes by reinforcing stereotypes. By satisfying the idea that making Korean pottery is just what is expected of Dave because of his ethnic background, I'm able to use that social experiment to showcase the misguided of authenticity to the audience.
